Finance PWA case study

MoneyWent

A mobile-first expense tracker for Serbian fiscal receipts, designed to show where money went by receipt, item, category and household.

MoneyWent expense dashboard with category spending and recent receipts

Project overview

A local finance product built around real receipts.

MoneyWent was created for a familiar personal finance problem: people remember the store total, but not the details that explain where the money actually went. A banking app can show a merchant; it usually cannot show the products inside the receipt.

The product uses Serbian fiscal receipt QR codes as the primary input. Users can scan a receipt, review the parsed items, assign categories and keep a clearer spending history without connecting a bank account.

The MVP also supports manual expenses, household sharing, uncategorized item review, AI-assisted category suggestions, multi-language UI and offline-aware scanning states.

Product flow

From a paper receipt to useful spending insight.

  1. 01Create an account and join or keep a private household
  2. 02Scan the QR code from a Serbian fiscal receipt
  3. 03Fetch receipt details from the fiscal verification flow
  4. 04Review store, payment method, total and individual items
  5. 05Classify products into categories and subcategories
  6. 06Send uncertain items into an inbox for later review
  7. 07Track spending by category, receipt and time period
  8. 08Keep receipts queued when the phone temporarily loses connection
Receipt capture

Fiscal QR scanning replaces manual receipt entry.

MoneyWent is built around the real receipt format people already receive in Serbia. Instead of typing every purchase into a spreadsheet, users can scan the fiscal QR code or paste the SUF link when camera access is not available.

  • Camera-based QR scanning
  • Fallback SUF link paste flow
  • Duplicate receipt detection
  • Offline queue for later synchronization
Item-level clarity

The app tracks what was inside the receipt, not only the total.

Bank statements show the merchant and the final amount. MoneyWent goes deeper by keeping receipt items visible, so spending can be understood through groceries, transport, coffee, fees and other real categories.

  • Receipt detail pages with item lists
  • Manual expenses for purchases without a receipt
  • Cash and card payment context
  • Uncategorized inbox for items that need review
Category system

Categories stay flexible without losing structure.

Users can manage categories and subcategories while the product protects system categories that the app depends on. AI suggestions help evolve the taxonomy when similar uncategorized products appear repeatedly.

  • Custom categories and subcategories
  • Protected system categories
  • AI subcategory suggestions
  • Confidence threshold for automatic classification
Household sharing

Family spending can be shared without losing accountability.

MoneyWent supports a household model where members can see shared receipts, categories and inbox items. Editing and deletion stay accountable because receipts can only be changed by the member who entered them.

  • Household invite links and codes
  • Shared receipt and category visibility
  • Member roles for owner and member access
  • Solo household fallback when someone leaves
Finance context

Local currency behavior is built into the product.

The app starts from RSD and supports currency conversion using NBS middle exchange rates. That keeps the finance experience local to Serbian users while still allowing multi-currency understanding.

  • RSD as the default currency
  • EUR and USD conversion context
  • NBS middle-rate messaging
  • Spending charts by category and time
Mobile experience

The interface is shaped for quick use at the moment of purchase.

MoneyWent behaves like a focused mobile app: installable, dark, responsive and prepared for moments when users need to scan quickly, recover from poor connection or finish the entry manually.

  • Installable PWA behavior
  • Mobile-first authentication and scanning
  • Offline unavailable and sync states
  • Serbian and English interface support

Technical foundation

Built as an installable, mobile-first web app.

MoneyWent is implemented as a modern Next.js product with authentication, responsive app screens, browser camera access, PWA behavior and service-worker support for offline-aware interactions.

The product model is centered on receipts, items, categories, households and classification confidence. That structure allows the application to preserve raw spending detail while still producing simple summaries and charts for everyday users.
